Valdres Folkehøgskole

Valdres Folkehøgskole (or Folk High School) is located just west of Lillehammer, Norway. It is one of 77 schools of its kind in Norway. It is intended to be a gap-year program and is stucturerd as a more "traditional" education. It is a non-academic school and instead focuses on more experience-based learning. Each folk school has its own area of focus; from boat-building to moto-cross, you can do pretty much anything you like. Valdres Folkehøgskole concentrates mainly on "frilutsliv", or outdoor sports. I am spending one year here, from August 2010 until May 2011. There are almost 130 students and everyone lives on campus. The school is located only ten minutes from an alpine centre and is surrounded by over 1000 km of cross country trails. Although the snow is late this year, the region is normally known for long winters and abundant snow.
